When Peggy Childs and Susan Spellman decided to launch a new business, they knew it had to be meaningful and somehow help people in need.
Several years ago, Peggy and Susan retired to Amelia Island in northeast Florida and met when their husbands, Neil and Hank, were paired on the golf course.
They quickly formed a strong friendship, realizing that “giving back” was an important part of both of their lives. That sentiment inspired them to get involved in local community and volunteer activities to help domestic abuse victims, cancer patients and developmentally disabled adults.
“As a former teacher,” Susan said, “I know how a little effort and concern can positively impact the lives of others. We wanted our new business to make a difference in our customers’ everyday activities.”
Likewise, Peggy shared the same longtime commitment to helping people in need. In the 1980s, she designed and marketed a stylish cap and hairpiece, named the Headliner, which was an attractive alternative to a wig. The Headliner was the perfect solution for women who lost their hair from chemotherapy.
“It was an exhilarating and rewarding experience, just like this new venture,” said Peggy.
Susan and Peggy noticed that many elderly residents on Amelia Island used walkers, wheelchairs and scooters during their daily activities. They watched them fumble for their personal belongings while maneuvering their mobility aids. Some seniors had bags attached to their aids, but they were unattractive and not very functional.
“We can do better,” said Susan.
